Welding Supervisor course

Overview

This course leads to the following qualifications:

The Welding Supervisor qualification AS/NZS 2214-2019: Certification of welding supervisors – Structural steel welding as required by AS/NZS 5131 and the Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) scheme.
The HERA Certificate of Attainment covering the welding knowledge requirements for CBIP Elevating Work Platforms Inspectors – (Ref CBIP Doc. No: PRO-CER-09).

NOTE:

For those wanting to progress to the HERA Welding Inspector Level 1 – Steel Structures, (including IIW International Welding Inspector IWI-B) this covers the Welding Technology 1 Module (WT1). Further study and exams, the “HERA Welding Inspector Level 1” course and exams must be completed to gain this welding inspection qualification.
The course is also recommended for those preparing for the CBIP Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) examinations for welding technology; Ref. “Knowledge Requirements” in CBIP Doc. No PRO-CER-07).
The course is also ideal for anyone seeking an in-depth knowledge of structural steel welding but who do not require a formal qualification.

The course is available in 2 formats:

HERA Welding Supervisor Course – Consists of one week (40 hours) full-time in the classroom, and a Distance Learning component on the HERA E-learning platform. The Distance Learning requires the completion of a series of assignments online following the classroom course. The one-week classroom component is held in Auckland and Christchurch.

HERA Welding Supervisor Online Course – The is run on-line over a 4-week period as an alternative to the classroom course. It offers a structured learning environment but with more timing flexibility than the classroom course and avoids the cost of travel and accommodation for those from out-of-town.

Course requirements

You need to meet the following requirements to qualify to do this course.

Proficiency in the comprehension and writing of English as used in the engineering industry, and
Proficiency in basic mathematics.

Additionally:

For AS/NZS 2214, you must have a minimum of three years experience in the welding/fabrication industry.
For the IIW Welding Technology 1 Module (WT1), you must be able to show relevant experience in the metal working industry.

This course is open to anyone seeking an in-depth understanding of structural steel welding and the associated standards.

This course covers the AS/NZS 2214 syllabus and the Welding Inspector Welding Technology Module 1 requirements.

The role and responsibilities of the welding supervisor and inspector
Welding processes
Welding procedure qualification
Welding metallurgy
Construction and design
Welder qualification to AS/NZS 2980 and AS/NZS ISO 9606.1
Fabrication and welding for seismic applications
Compliance with welding and fabrication standards
Weld defects and acceptance criteria
Quality management systems to AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS 5131, SFC and AS/NZS ISO 3834.

Please note – optional refresher/exam preparation sessions are offered online before the exams.

Qualifications and Exams

For the AS/NZS 2214 Certificate and the HERA Welding Inspector WT1 module candidates must:

Attend the classroom course or watch the online lectures,
Complete the distance learning assignments,
Pass two examinations (65% pass mark):
1. Paper A Welding “Theory and Technology” (3-hour exam).
2. Paper B “Application of Standards” (2-hour exam).

For the HERA Certificate of Attainment for CBIP Elevating Work Platforms Inspectors candidates must:

Attend the classroom course or watch the online lectures,
Complete the distance learning assignments,
Pass examination Paper A Welding “Theory and Technology” (3-hour exam).

Note that for the CBIP Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) candidates must apply directly to CBIP.

Notes:

The exams are conducted “on-line”; exam procedures will be explained during the course.
The Online course fees included the exam fees.
For the “classroom” course exam fees are additional.

Alan McClintock | HERA Senior Welding Engineer

Alan is a qualified welder, welding supervisor and inspector IWI-C, and an IIW Welding Technologist. He has considerable experience with New Zealand and Australia welding related structural standards and related quality control procedures. Alan is a Lead Auditor for Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) Scheme.

Volkan Yakut | HERA Senior Welding Engineer

Volkan is an international welding engineer (IIW) with expertise in the field of Defence, Shipbuilding and Oil and gas. He holds NDT qualifications Level 3 for UT and Level 2 for RT, MPI, PT and VT. He is also a Lead Auditor for Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) Scheme.

Robert Ryan | HERA Welding Engineer

Robert is an international welding inspector (IIW IWI-S) and AS 2214 Welding Supervisor with expertise in the field of welding processes, procedures, training of welders as well as quality management systems to AS/NZS 5131 and SFC

Michail Karpenko | GM Welding Centre

HERA Michail, an international welding engineer (IIW), is a member of the Standards New Zealand and Australia Committees including WD-003 “Welding” actively involved in the revision and updating of welding standards such as AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS ISO 3834, DR ISO 17607, AS/NZS 5131. He was actively involved in establishing the Fabricator Certification Scheme (SFC) and is also a Lead Auditor for this Scheme.
