Welding Inspector Level 1

Overview

This course provides training in welding inspection.

It leads to:

HERA Welding Inspector – Steel Structures
International Welding Inspector – Basic (IWI-B)
HERA Certificate of Proficiency in Visual Testing of Welded Joints to AS/NZS ISO 17637:2019

The course content complies with requirements of the International Institute of Welding (IIW) and HERA requirements for the training of welding inspection personnel.

On the completion of the course, the candidates will be able to perform essential duties of the welding inspector within the scope of AS/NZS 5131 Section 7 and Appendix I including the revision and approval of welding procedures and welders’ qualifications, and reporting visual examination of welds in accordance with the standards and specifications.

Course requirements

You need to meet the following requirements to qualify to do this course.

Have successfully completed the HERA Welding Supervisor course
Proficiency in the comprehension and writing of English as used in the engineering industry,
Proficiency in basic mathematics
The ability to write reports

This course covers the scope of inspection activities as well as NDT techniques.

The role and responsibilities of a Welding Inspector
Welding terms and definitions
Mechanical testing on welded joints
Types and causes of weld imperfections
Welding procedures, approvals and welder approvals

NDT techniques:

Testing methods
Visual inspection
Liquid penetrant testing
Magnetic particle testing
Radiographic testing
Ultrasonic testing
Pressure test
Dimensional tests
Quality assurance
Practical work

The standards covered in this course include AS/NZS ISO 17637, AS/NZS 1554 part 1, 2 and 3, AS/NZS ISO 5817, AS/NZS 2980, and AS/NZS ISO 9606.

Exams

Candidates who wish to undertake exams leading to Welding Inspector qualifications must apply using form SF 001WI1 Application For Examination.

On successful completion of these exams, candidates are able to continue with their professional development by attending the HERA Welding Inspector Level 2 and IWI-S training.

This is because the IWI-B qualification is now a pre-requisite for the IIW International Welding Inspector IWI-S qualification and the HERA Welding Inspector Level 2 course.

Alan is a qualified welder, welding supervisor and inspector IWI-C, and an IIW Welding Technologist. He has considerable experience with New Zealand and Australia welding related structural standards and related quality control procedures. Alan is a Lead Auditor for Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) Scheme.

Volkan Yakut | HERA Senior Welding Engineer

Volkan is an international welding engineer (IIW) with expertise in the field of Defence, Shipbuilding and Oil and gas. He holds NDT qualifications Level 3 for UT and Level 2 for RT, MPI, PT and VT. He is also a Lead Auditor for Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) Scheme.

Robert Ryan | HERA Welding Engineer

Robert is an international welding inspector (IIW IWI-S) and AS 2214 Welding Supervisor with expertise in the field of welding processes, procedures, training of welders as well as quality management systems to AS/NZS 5131 and SFC

Michail Karpenko | GM Welding Centre

HERA Michail, an international welding engineer (IIW), is a member of the Standards New Zealand and Australia Committees including WD-003 “Welding” actively involved in the revision and updating of welding standards such as AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS ISO 3834, DR ISO 17607, AS/NZS 5131. He was actively involved in establishing the Fabricator Certification Scheme (SFC) and is also a Lead Auditor for this Scheme.
