HERA is pleased to announce the publication of HERA Report R4-155 – Optimised Sliding Hinge Joint (OSHJ): Design and Installation Guide for a Low Damage Seismic Resisting System.

This report has been authored by Dr Shahab Ramhormozian of AUT and Dr G. Charles Clifton of the University of Auckland, and is the culmination of several research projects to develop practical applications of sliding hinge joints for moment resisting steel frames.

The Optimised Sliding Hinge Joint (OSHJ) is a low damage, highly seismic resilient, versatile, and cost effective seismic resisting connection developed primarily for Moment Resisting Steel Framed (MRSF) buildings. The OSHJ is the optimised version of the traditional Sliding Hinge Joint (SHJ) with Asymmetric Friction Connections (AFCs).

HERA Report No. R4-155 – Optimised Sliding Hinge Joint (OSHJ): Design and Installation Guide for a Low Damage Seismic Resisting System

This guide first presents a background to the Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs), capacity design, and low damage seismic resisting systems design philosophy, followed by explaining the SHJ seismic behaviour as well as the advantages of the OSHJ in addition to those of the SHJ. Finally the specific design and installation philosophy and approaches for the OSHJ will be presented including detailed step-by-step design provisions. It is worth noting that HERA is preparing a worked design example of a multi-storey building incorporating traditional MRSF and OSHJ, and the authors would like to recommend the readers of this guide to study that report when is available.

This guide is based on a long-term analytical, experimental, and numerical research program undertaken by the authors aimed at optimising the SHJ, as a successful and widely used traditional low damage seismic resisting system, by removing the imperfections of the SHJ with minimal added cost or complexity to the existing system. This makes the MRSF with OSHJs a precise, accurate, versatile, and true low-damage system. The content of this guide may be expanded to, and implemented in, other seismic resisting systems (e.g. braces or column bases) incorporating asymmetric and/or symmetric friction energy dissipaters (AFCs or SFCs) where appropriate, provided careful and correct understanding and implementation of the concept is deployed in the design.
