Achieving satisfactory performance in welded connections, involves proper connection design, the specification of weld details, fabrication and quality assurance.

In New Zealand and Australia, steel structures designed to NZS 3404 or AS/NZS 5100.6 are required to be fabricated and erected in accordance with AS/NZS 5131 Structural steelwork – Fabrication and erection. This standard makes references to a number of welding-related standards such as AS/NZS 1554 series that are also applicable for applications such as: trailer manufacturing, marine and boatbuilding, maintenance etc.

Engineers are responsible for designing, assessment and maintenance of welded structures require knowledge in welding technology and inspection techniques.

To ensure that the welded steel component or structural steelwork is fit-for-purpose, the engineers need to be familiar with the key aspects of quality management in welding fabrication.

welding

This includes:

  • welding procedures
  • weldability of materials
  • applicable standards
  • weld inspection, and
  • quality as well as roles and responsibilities of parties involved (design, fabrication, inspection).

This webinar series is aimed at introducing the essential aspects of welding technology to professional engineers. It is especially relevant to designers and engineers whose roles include design of steel structures, construction review and the management of steelwork compliance inspection, in-service inspection, management of welding contractors and other relevant welding related tasks.

The webinars will be based on the following standards framework: NZS 3404; AS/NZS 5131; AS/NZS 1554 Part 1, AS/NZS ISO 3834, AS/NZS ISO 17637; AS/NZS 9606.1; and AS/NZS 2980.

These sessions will be presented by HERA’s welding experts and will include a 45 min long presentation followed by a Q&A session.

The following are the webinar series topics:

  • Introduction to welding procedures
  • Introduction to welding processes
  • Welding of structural steel to AS/NZS 1554.1
  • Welding of reinforcing steel to AS/NZS 1554.3
  • Weld Defects
  • NDT and Inspection to AS/NZS 5131 Appendix I
  • Welding of structural stainless steel to AS/NZS 1554.6
  • Welding of aluminium to AS/NZS 1665
  • Stud Welding to AS/NZS 1554.2

On the completion of this webinar series, attendees will be able to apply welding knowledge to their projects and communicate quality requirements to fabricators and inspection companies.

Each webinar can be attended separately.
